James

I am a lifelong musician and drummer of the local Vancouver alternative/indie rock band Meltt. I have been a member of Meltt since 2014 and played throughout my UBC Bachelor's of Political Science and International Relations degree and my subsequent LLB degree program. In 2020 during the COVID pandemic, after the release of our first full-length album, our band gained an international fanbase. Over the pandemic, our streaming and views online increased exponentially from a few hundred thousand to tens of millions. In 2022, we started to tour across North America and later that year we signed with the international independent record label Nettwerk Music Group. Last year we released our second full-length LP with Nettwerk and toured North America twice getting down to Mexico City to play for one of our biggest fanbases. Right now we are working on our next album and hoping to tour in Europe next summer. Naturally, as a musician, I am most interested in the entertainment side of IP law, especially music copyright. I followed some famous cases of copyright infringement for songwriting like Tom Petty v Sam Smith and Pharrell Williams v. Bridgeport Music. I am looking forward to gaining a deeper understanding of the world of IP Law. However, I am also interested in many other aspects of IP law. As a consumer of video games, film and TV and various forms of art all of these areas interest me as well as areas in business like logo trademarking.

The Supreme Court of the United States has asked the federal government their thoughts about large music companies (Sony, Warner and Universal) suing an […]

The White Stripes suing Trump for copyright Infringement

By James on September 10, 2024

I have been the drummer and founding member of the internationally touring locally based Vancouver alternative rock/pop band Meltt since 2014. This has brought the complicated and expansive world of IP law in the music and entertainment industry into my day-to-day work life and has fascinated me ever since. This article (published yesterday Sept 9th, […]
