By James on November 14, 2024

For my second assignment, I sat down with Kurt Dahl the “Lawyer-Drummer” for a podcast interview on everything IP law in the music and entertainment industry. Kurt is a well-known Canadian entertainment lawyer with over 14 years of experience. Kurt has significant experience in the entertainment industry and works closely with clients from all over Canada to provide a comprehensive range of legal services in music, film, television, radio, theatre, publishing, visual arts, internet, new media, tech, video games, animation, modelling, and artist representation.

He is also the drummer of the band “One Bad Son” which has toured North America many times, scored five top 10 singles and a #1 song, and released 9 albums with various artists. Kurt has worked closely with major industry players like 604 Records, The Feldman Agency, Frontside Group, Strut Entertainment, Nettwerk Music Group and Hive Management. His band has toured arenas with Def Leppard, Shinedown, and Judas Priest, and in 2019 we shared the bill with The Rolling Stones in front of 70,000 people. He is also the lawyer for my band Meltt and has helped us negotiate all of our major deals. Kurt has an awesome and informative social media for all things music and entertainment law, give him a follow @lawyerdrummer.

In this interview Kurt and I talk about how IP law affects the music industry and more specifically the music industry. We touch on the role of copyright, trademark and contract law in the music business and the implications that the use AI may have in the future of the industry.
