Netflix vs Game Company – Rebel Moon

If you are like me and enjoy Sci-fi movies and games or messy contract disputes, this article will be an interesting one!

Recently, California-based game company Evil Genius Games (“EG”) sued Netflix for breach of contract over the streaming giant’s forthcoming new science fiction series “Rebel Moon”. The contract between Netflix and EG agreed on EG creating a tabletop role-playing game based on the upcoming film “Rebel Moon”. EG claimed that Netflix falsely accused EG of breaking its confidentiality obligations by releasing confidential content and unapproved artwork at a gaming trade show, in attempt to seize the rights to the game and intellectual property of EG. EG created a 228-page “world bible” with a cohesive backstory for the “Rebel Moon” universe, which Netflix proposed to use in the film and spinoffs. EG’s complaint seeks to reclaim its rights to the intellectual property it created including the game and the “world bible”.

I am very interested to see how this case will unfold.

The case is Evil Genius Games Inc v. Netflix CPX LLC, U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, No. 2:23-cv-08117.
