How can small (black-owned) businesses protect themselves from “predatory” trademark practices?

Hello everyone,

I came across a really interesting article earlier this week that I thought I would share.

I’m sure we’ve all heard about instances where black content creators — whether they be artists, fashion designers, musicians, etc. — have had their work stolen by larger companies or personalities. This article is an interview with one such Chicago-based artist, whose intellectual property was leeched by an international clothing company. It not only provides insight into how intellectual property law can be harnessed to the benefit or detriment of resource-limited and socially marginalized parties, but it’s also a reminder of how arduous these processes are for everyday people, which I think is something we often forget when looking at this problems from the ivory tower.
