AI Drake and AI The Weeknd?

While I was procrastinating from studying for various exams, I came across a new song by Drake and The Weeknd.

As the title of the post suggests, the song was actually AI generated using Drake and The Weeknd vocals. The artist (“Ghostwriter977”) wrote the lyrics, recorded the vocals, and used AI to replace their vocals with those of Drake and The Weeknd.

As of yesterday night (April 17th), the song was removed from Spotify and other music streaming services.

I think the technology will only get better, and it’ll apply more pressure on music streaming services, companies, and the courts to get serious about delineating between what kinds of AI content is allowable under copyright and what’s not. It also raises the question of whether the creation and sharing of AI generated music can even be stopped. If not, how should the law respond? Will the next Drake and The Weeknd get famous by using or licensing their vocals for use in AI generated music?
