Pirate Joe’s

I was reminded today of a very interesting (and hilarious) bit of local history and a great example of IP law in action. As some of you know, unfortunately, we don’t have Trader Joe’s up here in Canada. A local man saw this unfilled niche and opened up a store reselling TJ’s merchandise. A hilarious legal battle ensued. Here’s a good article about it.

On a personal note, I used to patronize the store pretty regularly when it was still operating. Mike (the owner) was always lovely and had a great sense of humor about the whole thing – as evidenced by him dropping the P in the shop’s name after losing his first appeal.

“Unaffiliated. Unauthorized. Unafraid.” I wish I knew about this place earlier.
