Hey everyone, I found this interesting piece regarding the effect the pandemic had on trademark application. Although the data is from Turkey, I think we are likely to see a similar trend here in Canada, if someone can find an article or some statistics around this please let me know.
Essentially, the evidence suggests that in 2020, trademark application started slowly fall relative to applications in 2019, however, they began to climb steadily the months following the WHOs declaration of a pandemic. One can see that the amount of trademark applications in the summer months of 2020 nearly doubled that of the trademark applications in the summer of 2019, this also occurred in the winter months around the holidays of 2020.
My only guess is this – as more and more companies started to change to the online format, they wished to ensure their mark or good-will was safe, and so they began to apply for trademark protection. It will be interesting to watch and see what occurs this summer, will applications drop as vaccines roll out and society returns to “normal” or will this trend continue due to the secondary effects of the pandemic.
I will try and update this website once next years data comes out, if not, hopefully someone in next years class can do so!
Let me know what everyone thinks,
