Week 7 Fall 2024 – Slides & Video
My experience suggests mentally budgeting for roughly one technical gaffe per semester when using lecture capture. Guess this week was that class for IP Law. So close to Halloween the horrors of the “headless instructor” did seem oddly appropriate, but hardly useful. Accordingly, you will find only slides and my voice-over below. As well, the sound is not working for the first few seconds of the class, but little of substance was lost. All my bad – I didn’t even think to check the cameras because they’ve been so effortless and perfect in our room this semester, and I couldn’t imagine anyone moving them. Lesson learned – I hope. Apologies.

This is a wild time to take IP Law. Although IP Law has been grabbing headlines for the last decade, the dawn of useable A.I. is challenging fundamental legal assumptions in a new way. This semester could even see some of these early court cases provide us with a substantive copyright law decision or two indicating possible future directions. Watching an area of law that had its basic assumptions set hundreds of years stressed by the weight of technological change is not necessarily a new narrative, but it remains a relevant one both to the practice of law and the cadence of our daily lives.
